What: York Minster is the largest Gothic Cathedral in Northern Europe. Excavations have revealed Norman, Roman and Viking origins, even though records go back only up to medieval times.
York Minster is centrally situated and visible from much of the city. It has three towers and is the fifth church to be built on this particular site. The wonderful 14th and 15th century stained glass windows, including the famous Rose Window, are visual treats. This is a York 'must see'.
Admission: York Minster receives no financial support from central or local government for the building's upkeep and has recently introduced an entry charge to maintain this fantastic holy and historic building.
Entry into the Minster: Adult: £5.00, Concessions: £3.50, Children (under 16s): Free
Entry to the Undercroft, Treasury & Crypt: Adults: £3.50, Concessions: £3.00, Children: £2.00
Combined ticket (includes Minster and Undercroft, Treasury & Crypt): Adults: £7.00, Concessions: £5.00
Entry to the Tower: Adults: £3.00, Children: £1.00.
Concessions are seniors (60+) and students.
Opening times: Monday - Saturday: The Minster will open at 07:00. The charging will operate from 9:00 - 16:45. From 16:45 to 17:30 entry to the Minster will be for the Evensong church service only. The Minster will then be open from 17:30 - 18:30.
Sundays: The Minster will be open in the morning for Sunday services. The charging system will operate from 12:00 - 15:45. From 15:45 to 16:30 entry to the Minster will be for the Evensong church service only. The Minster will then be open from 16:30 - 18:30
Undercroft, Treasury & Crypt: Monday - Saturday: 9:00 - 17:00; Sunday: 12:00 - 17:00
Tower: Monday - Saturday: 9:00 - 17:30; Sunday: 12.00 - 17.30
Closed Good Friday and Easter Sunday.
N.B: no sightseeing is permitted before 12 noon on Sunday's, the Central Tower is closed when weather conditions are 'unfavourable' and opening times are subject to change for major services at this church.
